I have done many stained glass pieces from the pet owners’ personal photo, but this one was different. This particular dog had died earlier in the year, and this piece would be a special memorial for the owner to keep and cherish. The pressure was really on to get this one right. To capture the look, fell and essence of this very special member of the family that had been taken from them. Could pieces of glass, soldered together actually be able to do all this? Yes.
Miles became a special project for me right from the start. Looking through the dogs’ own photo album, I say him grow from a puppy to an aged senior citizen. The more I looked into his eyes in the photo the more alive he became to me.
I become emotionally involved in my work and my love of dogs can’t help be become ingrained in what I do. From the initial process of creating a pencil sketch from the original photo, on to painstakingly selecting the glass that will give just the right look, texture and reflection, to finally giving the completed piece a finish coat of wax, no detail is overlooked or sloughed off.
Why go to all this trouble? Because this one was special and important to the woman who commissioned it. Just like my next commissioned piece will be special and important to that person, and it’s up to me to get it right.
